Dr. Ladislao Nagy Ferrari

Message from Dr. Ladislao Nagy Ferrari

“Turn away from evil, do good, and live forever”

Psalm 37:27

Dear parents, faculty, students and university community, I address you through this message to introduce the comprehensive educational project of Universidad de Desarrollo Sustentable, which I represent.

After a long academic career at Universidad Nacional de Asunción, with active participation as Paraguay's representative in Grupo de Montevideo (Mercosur Public Universities), and later at Universidad Americana de Asunción, and after completing postdoctoral studies in Germany to learn about university life in Europe, I joined other academics in developing a university project that considers factors generally absent from most universities today.

Although almost all traditional European universities established in the fourteenth century (Bologna, Paris, Oxford), and those in North and South America in the seventeenth century (Harvard, Córdoba), originated with a focus on theological education, they later moved away from their spiritual roots toward scientific humanism, seeking answers to humanity's great questions through reason and science.

Universidad de Desarrollo Sustentable restores a spiritual education approach across all its fields so that graduates, alongside their technical and scientific training, gain an understanding, many for the first time, that spiritual values can be as important as or more important than material ones.

We are concerned that a highly skilled young person could use those skills to commit crimes with impunity or break the law by exploiting their knowledge. We want our graduates to keep in mind the existence of divine justice that will sooner or later hold them accountable. Only with honest and capable people can we achieve sustainable development for our countries and the planet, respecting the rights of those not yet born and therefore unable to defend themselves.

Our university will always work within the law and its academic regulations, making every effort to ensure the highest level of academic excellence that Paraguay deserves.

Our team of academics, leaders and staff is committed to continually improving the university's educational and operational conditions nationally and internationally through agreements with foreign institutions and universities to bring in and share talent, knowledge and internationally renowned faculty.

Finally, I would like to thank and congratulate students and their families for their trust in our university. I commit to honoring that trust and effort with a high-quality education that will help Paraguay become more sustainable, with a better quality of life and greater opportunities to build a more balanced and supportive society.

Proyecto Canaán

Since 2007, UDS and Fundación Génesis have supported the reforestation initiative called "Proyecto Canaán" in Altos, Departamento de Cordillera. The project began in 1975 through the enthusiastic and sustained efforts of Dr. Ladislao Nagy Ferrari, also the creator, founder and rector of Universidad de Desarrollo Sustentable.

The project began with 3 hectares and now covers 87, continuing to serve as a nature reserve in keeping with Dr. Nagy's original vision. The reserve preserves around 40 hectares of natural forest, several freshwater springs and 2 streams more than 2 kilometers long, with both banks within the property.

The site has also become a refuge for many bird species and other animals threatened by surrounding deforestation, including monkeys, wild cats or tirikas, armadillos, snakes and other reptiles such as the tegu.

The reforestation project begun in 1979 by Jadav Payeng on Majuli Island, India, has been described as HEROIC in several online articles. The determined "Proyecto Canaán" reforestation initiative, begun by Dr. Nagy in Paraguay, is supported by UDS because it is considered equally HEROIC.

Species in the Reserve

The "Proyecto Canaán" reforestation initiative initially planted native and nonnative species on an experimental basis. Today, the reserve contains:
